Gifrer
Gifrer is a French laboratory founded in 1912 and devoted to everyday family care. Its Physiologica and Septinasal ranges bring sea water sprays and saline washes for daily nasal hygiene, and Paris Pharmacy ships them to the US straight from Paris.
Gifrer: More Than a Century of Family Care
Gifrer was born in 1912 from the meeting of Paul Louis Barbezat, a chemist, and the Gignoux brothers, who made hydrogen peroxide. In its early years, the company produced chemicals, including dyes for the Lyon textile industry and nitrocellulose for motion picture film. In 1920, Paul Louis Barbezat found a process to stabilize hydrogen peroxide. After the Second World War, his son Marc Barbezat, a pharmacist, took over and built the business around family care products. In 1981, Gifrer created saline solution in sterile single-dose vials, a new format for everyday hygiene. Since 2000, the company has belonged to Qualiphar, a family-owned Belgian laboratory. Gifrer makes 80% of its products in France and all of them in Europe, and works with health professionals.
Key Gifrer Product Lines
- Physiologica Isotonic Sea Water Nasal Spray: A daily nasal hygiene spray of natural sea water from France, close to the body's own salt balance, that washes away dust and city pollution, from birth.
- Physiologica Hypertonic Sea Water Nasal Spray: A saltier sea water solution for a more concentrated rinse of the nasal passages, released as a soft, continuous mist, preservative-free and suitable from birth.
- Physiologica Allergy Nasal Spray: A hypertonic spray with aloe vera and essential oils that forms a protective film on the lining of the nose, limiting contact with pollen, dust mites and pet hair, from 6 years old.
- Septinasal Nasal Wash Single-Dose Vials: Twenty 5ml vials of saline solution with glycerol, thyme extract and copper, one vial for each wash, for babies, children and adults.
Key Ingredients and Technology
Physiologica relies on natural sea water from France, which naturally contains sea salts and trace elements. The isotonic spray keeps a salt level close to that of the body's own fluids, gentle enough for use morning and evening, while the hypertonic version is saltier, for a more concentrated rinse. In the sea water sprays, inert nitrogen gas gives a fine, even mist, with no added preservatives. Septinasal carries on the single-dose format that Gifrer introduced in 1981: each vial is opened for one wash, so the solution stays fresh until use. Read the instructions on the box before use, and ask your pharmacist for advice for babies and young children.
