Bourjois was founded in Paris in 1863 by Joseph-Albert Ponsin, an actor who prepared makeup and perfume for actors and actresses. In 1868, his partner Alexandre-Napoleon Bourjois was entrusted with the whole business, which has carried his name ever since. In 1879 the house created its Java Rice Powder, made to leave the skin velvety, and its customers soon went far beyond the theater. In 1917, brothers Pierre and Paul Wertheimer took over its management, and their family owned Bourjois for nearly 100 years, until the American group Coty bought the brand in 2015. American shoppers may also remember a Bourjois classic: the blue-bottled perfume launched in 1928 and sold in the United States as Evening in Paris.
