Ballot-Flurin: Pioneers of Gentle Beekeeping

The Ballot-Flurin story began in 1976, when Catherine Flurin, then a 20-year-old student fascinated by bees, decided to become a beekeeper. Turning away from the intensive methods she was taught, she developed her own gentle beekeeping method, based on respect for bees and their natural rhythms. With her partner Philippe Ballot, also a beekeeper, she set up her first hives on a small property at the foot of the Pyrenees, and the Ballot-Flurin beekeeping farm was officially created in 1982. The couple were among the first to campaign for organic beekeeping without chemical inputs. The specifications Catherine wrote on how she produced honey and cared for her bees inspired the French association Nature & Progres when it created the first organic standard for beekeeping, and Ballot-Flurin products were the first to be certified under it. The Pyrenees Care Balm opened the brand's first range of hive-based care in 1992, followed by the black propolis extract, propolis gums, soaps and honey shampoos.
