Alepeo: A Master Soap Maker from Aleppo

Alepeo was founded by Riad Basmaji, a native of Aleppo who earned a doctoral engineering degree in applied mathematics from the Paris Observatory and trained quietly alongside the soap makers of his home city. In 2001, he and two friends created a company to bring Aleppo soap to France, and in 2003 he set up his first soap factory in the Aleppo region. In 2011 the soap making moved to Mornag, near Tunis in Tunisia, where the factory grew to 2,000 square meters in 2015, and certification of the products with Ecocert began in 2016. The goal of Alepeo is to make Aleppo soap by combining science and tradition: the olive oil is analyzed before use, and the soap paste follows precise measurements rather than guesswork. Since calm returned to Syria, part of the production is again made in Aleppo with a partner artisan soap maker. Beyond its bars, Alepeo offers hammam black soap, hair care and body care.

Key Ingredients and Technology

Aleppo soap is one of the simplest soaps there is: olive oil, laurel berry oil, water and lye, the sodium hydroxide that turns oils into soap. At Alepeo, the olive oil is chosen to meet the COSMOS standard and is extracted mechanically. The soap paste is prepared in a large cauldron, and the laurel oil is added at the end of saponification. The next day, the paste is poured into molds, then sliced into bars with a rake-shaped knife, and each bar is stamped with the Basmaji name in Arabic. The bars are stacked with space for air to circulate and left to dry in the open air for at least nine months. The share of laurel oil, typically between 2 and 20 percent in Aleppo soap, shapes the quality and the price of each bar.
